An inspired design on a square plaque, inscribed as if with glyphs in Meso-American style. One of these medals was given to each Olympic athlete, including each rower.
The obverse has five horizontal rows, the top three and bottom rows divided into five panels, each of the panels with a design symbolising a sport (rowing, the second panel from the left on the bottom row, is shown by four blades above water), and the fourth row inscribed "Mexico" with the five rings. The reverse is inscribed "Juegos de la XIX Olimpiada" between ruled lines extended from "Mexico" panel on other side of medal.
