Cigarette card titled 'E.A. (Ted) Phelps' showing, in coloured lithograph on card, a somewhat dour head and shoulders portrait Phelps. On the reverse the heading 'Sports Champions - A series of 50' -under the heading 'No.21'. Underneath text headed 'Eric Phelps' describing how he won the world's professional sculling championship in May 1930, defended the title against Bert Barry in Oct 1930 and against Major Goodsell in 1932, and lost it to H.R. Pearce in 1933, and also won Doggetts Coat and Badge. At the bottom 'Issued with Ardath Cork Cigarettes.'
Note this cardis identical to another, issued with State Express 333 Luxury Cigarettes 10 for 6d, with identical size, image and text.
Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
