French rowing medal - "Championnat du S.O. D'Aviron - Toulouse - A. Soubies - 1907"

Sterling vermeil medal . The obverse shows a head facing right, wearing helmet with laurel sprig tucked under earpiece and jutting over brow, surmounted by a cockerel, the sun setting in the sea, its rays lighting the letters "France". The reverse has elaborate aquatic motifs (including an oarsman, oars, a rudder, a trident, a paddle and a boathook) surrounding central disc with the above lettering. [the head reminiscent of the magnificent woman with pigeon theme of the 1895 Donnay poster]

Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
