The label on the reverse reads:

"AMERICAN SCULLING CHAMPION LOSES TO ENGLISH MUTE BY AN ACCIDENT

Walter Hoover, the American Sculling champion lost the Diamond Sculls to D.H.L Gollan, an English mute at Henley on the Thames by an accident. Hoover caught his oar in a log boom which marked the course when Gollan took the lead. The American never regained this lead and lost the race. Photo shows Hoover on the left and Gollan, the winner on the right."

Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
