'The Varsity Eight Returning from Abingdon, - Passing Homeward Bound Nuneham Parties' - Colour lithograph. Published by J. Ryman, High St. Oxford.

Showing a randan with two starboard and one port oarsman, and two female passengers and a steerer, frantically trying to get out of the way of a powerful looking eight (blades square on the recovery) bearing down upon them, as people watch from a houseboat being towed by a horse on the far shore and two swans in the left foreground have eyes only for each other.

Number 20 (per Paul Mellon's cataloguing) from an undated set of twenty-four images (of which seven are rowing related) after Canon George Robert Winter (1826-96) titled "Eton and Oxford. A Few Familiar Scenes."; the set referenced in Abbey, SCENERY (nos. 285 and 446).

Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
