Description
The Procession of the Boats, Oxford

By Vincent Brooks after a watercolour by G. Howse 1858, and published in 1859 by Ryman of Oxford.

Mounted colour lithograph signed lower right "G. Howse 1858", showing the procession of the eights up and down the Isis, with one boat [the head boat?] seemingly lying before the Oxford University Boat Club [see banner] barge and receiving, and returning, the tossed oars salute of each of the other boats

One of the greatest rowing prints, from the best known set of classic rowing print; this print, like the others in the set, as originally issued, consisted of the image (trimmed within the color) mounted on a piece of paper that had itself been overprinted in light sepia, leaving a white "window" in the middle into which to set the image with a small strip of white visible as "margins" around the image, and with "reverse negative" white lettering for the title and publication line below the image, the lettering typically faded to illegibility when (and if) found - and here not present.

Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
