Description
The Oxford and Cambridge Boatrace

Published by Beckmann Bros. of London, 27 Cow, Cross Street. Lithographed by F. Hartwich c1870.

Un-mounted black and white lithograph showing finely drawn, but somewhat European, spectators in somewhat odd (for the Thames) small craft in the foreground, viewing (and almost superimposed over) a Boat Race scene. The title is in quite elaborate lettering with decorative capitals.

The apparent number of blunders in the publication line suggests that this may have been printed in Germany.Derivative of the scene in the 1865 ILN Supplement wood engraving.

Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
