Description
The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race
Published by S. Lipschitz, London and Hamburg, c1871.
Mounted colour lithograph. Probably the best known large folio English rowing print, showing two starboard stroked eights [historically inaccurate] racing in the mid distance, with a detailed view of spectators on the near bank, most of the men watching the race and waving hats and handkerchiefs, but a woman in center foreground with head turned in direction of either children playing in right foreground, or a nearby fashionably dressed woman.
There are several variations of the title and publication lines for this image, and inconsistent references to the date[s?] of publication but the credible consensus would appear to be 1871.
Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
