A black and white photograph of a winch or capstan once used to bring craft upstream through the Flash Weir at New Lock near Hurley.

The photograph is part of a series of photographs known collectively as 'River Journey' which were commissioned by the Museum for its Thames Gallery's permanent display.

The photographer Jaap Oepkes works near the Thames in London and in 1998 spent two months travelling on the Thames, documenting leisure and work for this series of photographs.
