Description
A scrapbook containing cuttings from a series of national and regional newspapers largely relating to the River Thames with many entries devoted to drought and flood. There are two distinct periods 1927-1938 and 1947-1960.

The following is a list of some articles of note:

1. A report of the death of Sir William Anker Simmons, four times mayor of Henley on Thames and a Thames Conservator. Photographs of his funeral procession afloat on the Thames accompanying the article.

2.The official opening of the new Albert Bridge near Windsor.

3. Articles and photographs concerning the opening of Eynsham, Kings and Godstow locks.

4. Several pictures of Thames floods in 1929.

5. An article from the South East Mercury dated 11th August 1931 reporting the launch of the first powered barge for the Thames. A photograph shows the launch from Piper's Wharf, East Greenwich. The article also contains information on the Thames sailing barges and boat building at Piper's Wharf.

6. An article from the Evening News dated 19th July 1932 on the law keeping duties of the Thames Conservancy together with a description of the reporter's passage in a Thames Conservancy patrol launch.

7. A series of articles on the drought of 1933/34.

8. A report from The Surrey Comet dated 13th February 1935 on the presentation by the Thames Conservators of a silver ships bell to the newly commissioned submarine H.M.S. Thames.

9. Articles and photographs on the Thames floods of early 1937.

10. An article from The Times of 19th January 1927 on the history (and the deterioration) of the Kennet and Avon canal.

11. An article from the Reading Standard of December 23rd 1938 carrying the story of the Holy Brook which runs through Reading.

12. An article from The Evening News of April 5th 1947 on the Chief Navigation Inspector of the Thames Conservancy, Mr H.F. Stapleton.

13. An article from The Evening standard of 20th November 1951 describing the flood control room in the Thames Conservancy H.Q. in London.

14. A long article entitled 'Old Farmer Thames' taken from The Farmer's Weekly of 21st July 1954 linking farming and the Thames.
