Description
'Webb's Wharf Henley on Thames' 1889
Framed watercolour attributed to Janet Cooper, but may be the work of her older sister Lucy - a well known painter of local scenes. It depicts 'Robert Webb and Son Timber Merchants' in the business's last days before the area was redeveloped in the 1890s. A tree trunk is being off-loaded from a barge onto a horse-drawn cart, using a single swinging derrick mounted on the wharf. A note written on the painting's backing paper, which may be contemporary, states that the picture shows 'Wharf House, Magdalen House & Manor Garden, neighbour to Phyllis Court'.
