Description
A pen used by Mr William Ewart Gladstone when he visited Slough train station on 16 December 1882. Believed to have belonged to Joseph Lock (see below).
Joseph Lock (great grandfather of donor) was Stationmaster at Henley from 1905-c1926. He lived with his wife Martha and their 5 sons and 3 daughters at Station House on Reading Road. All 5 of the sons fought in the war. One of them, Sydney Lock, was killed on 26th October 1917 and his name is on the memorial on the side of Henley Town Hall.
Two of their daughters, Ivy Winch and Olive Lock helped look after wounded soldiers at the Red Cross Hospital in Henley town hall. Olive Lock kept an autograph book signed by a number or the soldiers she treated. Whilst working at the hospital each of the women was given a crucifix by a soldier who was grateful for their care.
