Description
A portrait of the oarsman Edward Hawks aged 46 years with Durham Cathedral in the background, 19th century. Artist Unknown, English School.
Oil on canvas.

Hawks was a professional rower from Gateshead. His most notable competitive achievement was winning the Champion of the World race with four of his nephews at the Thames Regatta in 1845. He was a last minute replacement to the boat after Edward Clasper died in April of that year, aged 25.
