Description
'Moonlit Ruins (Design for mural for Merton Priory Civic Restaurant)' by John Piper, c.1942-43, gouache on paper, Arts Council Collection
During the Second World War the Ministry of Food set up over 2000 ‘British Restaurants’ to provide inexpensive meals for people affected by bombing. Artists were asked to decorate the spaces, and many produced murals. Piper created a series of paintings which he then passed to scene painters to enlarge.
