CD copy of an oral history recording on a mini-disc of Mr. David Buckle. David Buckle was born in London; he was orphaned aged 3 years and went to live in an orphanage in Ramsgate.He lived there until the South Coast was bombed then he was evacuated to Radley in Oxfordshire. He lived at Bickwood Camp which was run by the Church of England. The young men their worked as farm labourers on local farms. Mr Buckle gives a vivid description of life in the camp and on the farms. Towards the end of 1941 he joined the Home Guard. He found it interesting meeting different people, life on the farm could be lonely. He was in the Home Guard for just over a year then he enlisted in the Royal Marines. He was sent to Portsmouth where he found what war was really like, he spent his first night there in an air raid shelter and expereienced his first air raid; bombing in Portsmouth was very frequent and heavy. He enjoyed his time in the Royal Marines, becoming the younest Seargent, but he did not extend his service after the war. He returned to Radley, where he had married in 1944, and settlled there. He had had enough of institution life.
