Description
CD copy of an oral history recording on a mini-disc of the war-time experiences of Reg Brayne.
Reg Brayne was born in Henley-on-Thames in 1921. He gives an interesting account of his childhood and his time in the Home Guard. At the outbreak of the war Mr. Brayne was working at Higgs & Co the stationers on Reading Road. He gives an interesting account of the publication of the Henley Standard newspaper at that time. As well as being in the Home Guard Mr. Brayne was also in the Scouts and remembers helping with the evacuees who came to Henley. He also talks abpot working with the Girl Guides, the Ambulance Service and the Boys Brigade. He remembers his experiences with the Home Guard, how tehy guarded the Oxfordshire half of the bridge, the other half being guarded by Home Guard units from Berkshire. He felt that the Home Guard was a serious effort to make the county safe from invasion. There was a real fear that there could be invasion by paratroopers and that this country could fall as quickly as France had.
