Description
CD copy of an oral history recording on a mini-disc of Mr. Edward Selwyn. Mr Selwyn gives an interesting account of the effect of the outbreak of war on school life. He was a pupil at Radley College at the outbreak of war. The college had its own Home Guard which he became a member of. He had been in the OTC (Officer Training Corps) so he was familiar with rifles. He left the College in April 1940 and before returning to his home in Remenham, spent some time in Cambridge. He joined the Home Guard there and also worked on a farm. He returned to Henley in August 1940 and served in the Home Guard until he joined the Air Force in December of that year. He gives a clear account of how people were keen to play their part in the defence of the country, although he does say that, compared with other areas, Henley suffered very little damage during the war. Reading was a target. He felt that the Home Guard was a worthwhile exercise, a morale booster.
