Description
A theatre backdrop painted by John Piper, used in the Kenton Theatre in Henley for the production of Beauty and the Beast, July 21st - August 2nd 1952.
John Piper and Dr Alan Hartley took over the lease of the Kenton in 1951. Piper redesigned the interior of the theatre including installing a new proscenium arch with Corinthian columns at each side of the stage. To celebrate the reopening they staged a season of ballets choreographed by John Cranko and featuring Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Sir Peter Wright and Sonya Hana.
