Biographical Display
Painter and illustrator, mainly of military scenes. Studied in Dûsseldorf and Paris. Painted Napoleonic battle scenes, and episodes from many Victorian campaigns, in Afghanistan, Egypt, Africa and elsewhere. Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1879, the British Institution, the New Watercolour Society and the National Gallery. Works by him are in Bristol and Liverpool Art Galleries and in the Royal Collection. His work can be confused with that of his father also Richard Caton Woodville (1825-1855), an American military artist who settled in London in 1852.
