JULIUS 'BERRY' BERESFORD, Olympic oarsman and coach
Julius Beresford rowed at Henley every year from 1896 to 1914 and 1919 to 1923, first for Kensignton RC and from 1905 for Thames RC. In 1912 his Thames RC crew represented Britain in the coxed fours at the Olympic Games in Stockholm, where they finished second. In 1901 he won the sculling championship of the Netherlands. A four which he formed at Thames won the Stewards' in 1909 and 1911. In 1911 two Thames pairs - Beresford and A H Cloutte, and Bruce Logan and C G Rought - dead-heated in a semi-final of the Goblets. They agreed to toss for the result because three of them were due to race in the final of the Stewards'. Beresford and Cloutte won the toss and went on to win the final.
In 1919, weighing only 10 stone, he stroked Thames RC to victory in the Fawley Cup at the 1919 Peace regatta, aged 51.
After he stopped rowing he coached for the rest of his life. His Thames crews of 1927 won the Grand, Stewards', Thames and Wyfold. The 1928 crews won the Grand, Stewards', Thames and Goblets, and in 1929 the Wyfods and Goblets.
