Katherine Grainger won her second Olympic medal, a silver in the pair with Cath Bishop, in Athens in 2004, making her the first British woman to win Olympic medals at both sweep rowing and sculling. She became a world champion in the quad in quad in 2005, making her a world champion in sculling and rowing also, having won the pairs title in 2003.

Grainger was a member of the silver-medal winning quadruple scull at the Sydney Olympic Games 2000, the first British crew to win an Olympic medal since women's events were introduced into the games in 1976. The Sydney final resulted in a photo finish for second and third places, with Germany one length in front for the gold medal and Russia one-hundredth of a second behind GB for the bronze.

In 2003 Grainger formed a pair with Cath Bishop who came out of retirement, and together they won the world championships on the Idroscolo course in Milan. In 2005 she won her second world title in the quad with Rebecca Romero, Sarah Wincless and Frances Houghton, the first British quad to win gold. In an epic race they defeated the Germany, a crew which contained Katrin Boron (4 Olympic golds, 8 world titles). One of the Germans was born in the same year that Boron won her first, junior, gold medal.
