IVOR LLOYD, Channel sculler
Ivor Lloyd set a record for sculling the English Channel of 3 hours 35 minutes on May 4 1983. The previous record of 3 hours 50 minutes was set by the Rev Sidney Swann in 1911. He rowed from Folkestone to Cap Gris-Nez using a coastal boat suitable for rough conditions made by Pat Fennessy of Wargrave.

'The worst part was the optical illusion that the French coast was getting no closer because it was getting darker. The current was pushing me down and the wind got up. I started to lose reason...' Lloyd said.
