Son of an Antwerp sculptor, Jan Siberechts has long been regarded as one of the founders of English landscape painting. He met the 2nd Duke of Buckingham in Flanders in the early 1670s, and as a result came to England shortly afterwards. He appears to have been attracted by the demand for painters in Britain, at a time when there was no indiginous school of artists, mainly depicting country houses and their estates for his patrons..
