TOM MENDENHALL, rowing historian and author
Mendenhall was the prime historian of American rowing from its origins in the early 1800s through the 1900s, writing a brilliant series of profiles of the movers and shakers of the coaching scene from east to west coast. He is the author of the Short History of American Rowing and a superb history of the Harvard-Yale race. He became an expert on the English cloth trade during his time as a Rhodes scholar at Balliol College, Oxford. He taught history at Yale and became principal of Smith College. He was a great liberal, story teller and an amiable companion.
