Lucy Cooper was born in 1853 the second of five children and was brought up in a middle -class family in Henley where her father John Cooper was a local solicitor and Town Clerk. She painted some 23 watercolour views of Henley around the turn of the century, which, on her death were given to the town in her memory
The paintings span the years 1888 to 1925 and capture the mood of the era with a clear depiction of the businesses and shops that once typified the town of Henley from the timber and barges at Webbs Wharf to the skiffs on the river and hawkers on the streets. The collection of Lucy Coopers' watercolours usually hung in the Mayors parlour in the Town Hall and were given to the town in 1929.
