Ran Laurie, who was named Ranald after an uncle killed in the 1914-18 world war, won the Olympic gold medal for coxless pairs with his partner Jack Wilson at the 1948 games in London, where the rowing took place at Henley-on-Thames.
Laurie and Wilson formed their partnership at Cambridge where they rowed in three winning Boat Race crews from 1934-36, breaking the record in 1934. In that year Laurie also stroked Leander Club to a record in the Grand Challenge Cup at Henley, and he stroked the 1935 and 1936 Cambridge crews, with Wilson in the No 7 seat.
Laurie and Wilson were the finest pair-oar of their generation. It was not until a young Steve Redgrave and Andy Holmes won the Olympic games in 1988 that Britons once more excelled in this most difficult of boats to race.
