Steve Fairbairn
Stephen 'Steve' Fairbairn (1862-1938), an Australian by birth, was a notable oarsman and a controversial coach. He rowed four times for Cambridge in the Boat Race (1882, 1883, 1886 & 1887) and won both the Grand (1885) and the Stewards (1886) at Henley.

From 1904 until the mid-1930s, Fairbairn coached Jesus College, Cambridge and, during the 1920s, Thames RC and London RC. Each was highly successful under his charge. Critical of the formalism of the English Orthodox style, he put great emphasis on a natural approach and on the need to work the blade effectively. An iconoclast at the time, he was robust in defence of his views which, in their questioning of accepted attitudes, were healthy for the sport. He was elected a Steward at Henley in 1928.
