JOHN GARTON
John Garton (1916-2002) followed his distinguished rowing career by combining a business career bottling Coca Cola with managerial skills in the top echelons of rowing. As a competitor he was captain of boats at Eton in 1935, an Oxford Blue in 1938 and as president in 1939, and captain of Leander.

Garton served on the council of the Amateur Rowing Association from 1948 to 1977, as president from 1969. He became chairman of Henley Royal Regatta in 1966, thus holding the top posts in the governing body and the most prestigious regatta simultaneously. He also sat on the British Olympic Association from 1969-77, was chairman (1958-59) and president (1980-83) of Leander Club, and chairman of the organising committee for the 1975 world rowing championships in Nottingham.
