Sir Leslie Matthew Ward was a caricaturist, portrait and architectural painter, he was the son of E M Ward. He was apprenticed to an architect and studied architecture at the R A Schools. He exhibited from 1868. He provided portrait caricatures for the Graphic and most notably, from 1873 to 1909 for Vanity Fair. He was knighted in 1918. He was probably the best, and certainly the most celebrated, caricaturist of the time.
