'The company of Matt Wood, according to the London trade directories, came into being in 1931, becoming Limited in 1954. Throughout the Company's history, it was always based at the Bigg's Row address. Throughout the 50 odd years of its existence, there was only ever one other rival boatsmith entered in the directories, which gives some indication of how specialist a trade it was. The collection consists of a range of hand tools and machines connected with the metal working trade, and also metal rods etc. used to form the finished objects. As a boatsmith, Wood made all the metal fittings which were to be attached to a boat. Apparently, the Company closed in 1982.' Information from Museum of London, 2005.
