'Gate to the River', 1940 by John Piper
Ink and wash painting by John Piper (1903 - 1992) painted in 1940.
The picture is a view from the river of a pedimented classical archway in Fawley Court gardens near Henley on Thames. The gate leads the walker to the river.

The gateway itself is an imported Norman doorway and is placed not far from the midway mark on the Regatta course.

Dorchester Abbey by John Piper

The Abbey has a stained glass front. Trees and bushes surround the building. Piper has used dark colours: greys with patches of red, green and orange-peach.

The reverse reads "One of an edition of 500 in a series of six designs commissioned by the National Art Collections Fund & Wedgwood"
