Cigarette card titled 'Eric Phelps' showing, in monochrome photo on card, a close-up stern-on view of Phelps in a single wearing a white sleeveless undershirt and white handkerchief around his head. On the reverse the heading 'British Sporting Personalities - A series of 48 -No.46'. Underneath text headed 'Eric Phelps' describing how he failed to beat Pearce for the world title in 1933, but defeated Lou Barry for the English Sculling title in 1936, and also won Doggetts Coat and Badge. At the bottom 'Wills Embassy Cigarettes- W.O. & H.O.Wills- Issued by Imperial Tobacco Co. Ltd.'
Part of the Thomas E. Weil Collection. Thomas E. Weil is a very knowledgeable and respected collector of rowing memorabilia from all over the world. His extensive collection includes material from many years of the Oxford and Cambridge University Boat Race, and Henley Royal Regatta. He also lectures and writes on rowing history and is a Trustee of the River and Rowing Museum.
