LOU BARRY, coach of GB, Cambridge and Tideway Scullers crews
Lou Barry, brother of Burt and nephew of Ernie, both world professional sculling champions, was a Doggett's and Newcastle Christmas Handicap winner who coached in Ireland and Italy before the second world war and coached the GB team at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He coached Cambridge to victory in the boat race six times from 1968-73 and a seventh in 1975. He founded Tideway Scullers School, an elite club with emphasis on sculling for preparation for rowing as well as sculling. His bust adorns the club premises on the finish line of the boat race course at Chiswick.
